Conversations in the car

As we were driving around today, I started singing Christmas carols. Here's how it went...
Luna: Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride on a one horse open sleigh. HEY!
Logan: What????
Luna (laughing and singing at the same time): Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way. Oh what fun it is to ride on a one horse open sleigh. HEY!!!!
Logan: WHAT?????

Little Drummer Boy

I thought it would be fun to go visit Tia and Mike today. Tia hasn't been feeling well. A visit with Logan would cheer her up.
While Tia and I were working on something in her office, I could hear Logan and Mike chatting across the hall in his office. Not sure what Mike asked, but I heard Logan saying: "I love my Mommy. I love my Daddy". Ahhhh.
After visiting and checking out the whole house, Tia asked Logan if he would like to check out her drum set which was set up in the living room. She sat down with him, expecting him to do what all little kids do - bang on the drums randomly. But he very purposefully waited till she showed him what to do. She held his hands and did the riff a few times. Adding a big bang on the cymbal at the end for good measure.
After 5 or 6 times with Tia, Logan did it on his own. Comple with the big bang flourish at the end. I was completely amazed at his approach to the whole project - waiting for guidance, patient while being taught, learning, then trying it on his own. Tia was amazed at how good he was.
As we were leaving, I realized that we had been there for almost 2 hours. Tia was still feeling good and in great spirits. A visit with Logan was just what she needed.
PS. Dear Santa, guess what Logan might want for Christmas next year???

First Symphony
December 5, 2014
At the last minute, Logan came to stay with us for Friday and Saturday. We had tickets to the Phoenix Symphony Holiday Pops Concert and thought this might be a good first symphony for Logan. We were prepared for him to last a minute or an hour. Whatever happened.
Turns out, he lasted for 45 minutes. 15 minutes waiting for it to start and a full half hour of the concert. And he seemed to enjoy it.
When he got too figity, I took him out to the lobby where we ran around - mostly up and down the stairs. At the very top, I took him back into the hall so he cold see how big it was. I was whispering to him that Papa Bruce was all the way down by the stage. At which point, Logan drew a deep breath and yelled: PA-PA BRUCE!!! The conductor, who was introducing the Little Drummer Boy, said without skipping a beat: "ahhh, our own drummer boy...". I scooted back out as fast as I could, laughing.
We all had a great time. We ended the evening with a BIG TRex roar.

Hot Chocolate 5k
We picked up my race bag for the Hot Chocolate Run tomorrow.
Logan's favorite part of the activity was the chocolate candies. I love that he has chocolate on his face.

Phoenix Art Museum: First Visit

I've been looking forward to Logan's first visit to the Phoenix Art Museum. We finally found the perfect occasion - Circles Cowboy Brunch. We'd be there before the museum opened to the public, there would be a great breakfast and Bruce would be with us. It was an added bonus that we could introduce Logan to our friends who have heard so much about him.
What a wonderful visit. Logan was only okay with the brunch part of the visit. He had other things to do! First stop? The "Fireflies".

I've been through this exhibit 5 or 6 times. Going through it with Logan was magical. Normally, I walk straight through, hoping I don't run into the walls and calming myself that I will surely find the exit. I always have.
That's the way Logan and I went through. The first time. Once outside, Logan squealed: "Again!". In the middle of the exhibit on our second trip, he asked to be put down. He fearlessly walked the entire room, not worrying about the walls or where the exit was. It was a liberating experience for me - instead of feeling anxious, I was able to simply enjoy the beauty.
On our third trip, Logan walked right on in, with a grateful Luna happily following.

It’s officially titled “You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies,” but over time, visitors have shortened that to “Fireflies” or the “Firefly Room.”

Playdate at the Village Racquet Club

One day, I asked a tennis pro at the Village about the best way to get Logan started in tennis. Judy gave some great advice: take him into one of the racquet ball courts. Throw the ball around, Let him play with the racquet. In general? Just create a fun time for him while he's holding a racquet.
What a fun time we had.
We played at playing with a racquet in his hand for about 30 minutes.

When we finished tennis, we noticed that there was no one on the basketball court. Can't let that opportunity go by. So we played basketball for a while.
We ended up our routine with running. Logan and I ran the FULL length of the court 5 times. All at Logan's doing.
This tennis thing might be good for Lucia, too.
Even after all of that, Logan had plenty left over when Papa Bruce came home.
Field Trip: A Downtown Phoenix Experience

Today's adventure is a Metro ride to Downtown Phoenix. Destination? Bank One Ballpark.
We started at the station at Central and Camelback. Well, we started at the parking lot at 2nd Street and Camelback. Not too long of a walk. The problem is that that was the first of four "not too long of a walk" walks.
We cracked the code on buying the tickets. Piece of cake. Then we sat down to wait for the train.

We tried several seats in several different cars, ending up at the seat where Logan could stand up at the window for the ride all the way to the Ballpark. We wanted to to check out the large kinetic sculpture called “Based on Balls” and, if we could, walk around the ballpark.
The ballpark was "pretty close" to the metro stop - "a not too long walk", Naturally, the best part of the sculpture is all of the balls that go round and round.
Time out for some dinosaur play - today's toy of the day.
There probably isn't anything sadder than a kid who can't get into the ballpark.
We walked another "not too long walk" to lunch.
It turned into a business lunch! We met with Cyberitas client, Kevin Cornish.
After another "not too long walk" back to the car.
PS. After so many "not too long walks" carrying Logan, Luna now puts the stroller in the back of the car for all field trips.

The hard work of play.

We took a spontaneous trip to McCormick Ranch Railroad Park. The model trains were so cool. We rode the carousel, the train and played indoors with Thomas.
After his nap, Logan played very hard - building, lining up, arranging and watching Ratatouille.

July 29 through August 4, 2014
The next field trip to the Village was so Theresa and Luna could water ski. We had so much fun, we decided to bring Logan back on Sunday morning for a lesson. MacKenzie Ski School kept saying: "If he can walk, he can ski!". We signed him up for a lesson.
With an overnight rainstorm on Saturday, the Sunday morning temperature was 65. Not only did we cancel Logan's lesson (though we have credit for another time), but we were freezing as we walked around the Village. Logan got a really cool jacket from Bruce and shirt and slacks from Lori. And an ice cream cone from Mommy.
Our first field was to take the boat over to the Village. Home to any number of kids' activities. He was marginal on the train, by himself. Loved the carousel with Mommy and couldn't get enough of the Parmesan cheese at lunch at Woody's. Yes, just the cheese.
We fed the ducks till it was time to go home for a nap.

Lake Arrowhead visit - July 2014
Lorin was going to be in Las Vegas for a few days participating in Basketball Fantasy Camp so we invited Theresa and Logan to join us at the Lake. Then, Lori was able to come out and join us. Just what the house was made for - a place to have fun with family.
(Note: Of course, the plans were a lot more complicated than that. But after a wonderful visit, who remembers all the different versions?)
I picked Theresa and Logan up at Ontario Airport and drove back to the Lake where they settled in with unpacking and naps. Bruce was driving over and arrived around 5. Let the vacation begin.
Bruce and I are always scouting for things that Logan might enjoy. We had our list. It was going to be fun seeing our vacation playground through Logan's eyes.
He fell in love with all of our singing animals. But his favorite was the chick who sings: "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands, etc." Logan was delighted because he knew this song - complete with the choreography. He clapped his hands, stomped his feet and shouted "Hooray!" all through the weekend.
We woke up one morning to see that he was watching "The Incredibles" (BIG Ball!) with his new buddies.
And Thomas and Friends were never far away.
This could be the start of a long relationship.

As he usually does, Logan brought his current favorite toys. Today's toy is a stuffed shark and a stuffed dolphin.
Naturally, he figured out how to meld all of today's favorite toy into one Favorite Toy experience.

Bruce thought Logan might enjoy the sheepskin piece that just arrived. In fact he loved it.
When Logan rolled over, he remembered his onetime favorite toy - a thingamajig from Uncle Jason.
JUMP City

We learned our lesson about the days getting too hot to do anything after 10:30 am. So we were at the door of Jump City - an indoor trampoline space - when it opened at 9 am. Not only did we miss the heat, but there weren't very many kids. All that and I found out they had a "grandparents package" that day. Stay as long as we want for just $10. Total!
What fun it was. Wall to wall carpet of trampolines. Lots of protections around the springs. Even with the ground. And lots of spring.
After jumping and running and jumping for 15 minutes, Logan invented a game using all the balls he could find. This wasn't so easy as it sounds because these were the same balls that the older kids were playing dodge ball with.

There was even a "padded" room with gymnastics equipment sized for kids. Logan totally surprised me when I saw that knew just how to use the equipment.
